as The first public event of a new year brought many surprises along. most significant of them is Ciryl Gane vs Francis ngannou (main event) for the heavyweight title which set a new benchmark in the division. how? let’s take a look.
round one went smooth for both fighters, some clinch and low kicks from ciryl were taken nicely by the champ.
later Francis targets not only the mouth but the body too. he threw push kicks with the nice striking of right-left hook and body uppercuts. also, he defended knee sidekicks and the brutal spinning wheel on the face like nothing.
but the real turning point comes in round three when Francis made successful single, double-leg takedowns and moved to the side control, which drove ciryl in an uncomfortable position.
round four has begun with a good low side as well as push kicks by both fighters. yet, the champ dominate because of two bear hug takedowns he performed and left ciryl no option but to take heavy punches onto the face.
in the final round, Francis is dropped through a single-leg attempt. however, from almost to a dominant mount position ciryl made a huge mistake that brings Francis to the side control likewise. after which interim-champ made his last attempt of heal lock but that thing didn’t go according to him as well.
according to my opinion, Francis knew somewhere back of his mind that winning this bout with T.K.O is going to be a tough job because ciryl is very light on his feet and there is no stiffness in his fighting style. for that reason, Francis built up his grabbing technique just to have a second option in the pocket.
despite being the interim heavyweight champ ciryl always fights like a welterweight. but in this fight, great kickboxing didn’t prove to be much beneficial for him plus no one from the red corner rather expected a wrestling game from Francis. what are your views about that, tell us in the comment section. thank you for reading.
